Beer Review: Black Abbey Miette

The Black Abbey Brewing Company has bottled several barrel-aged beers in limited releases over the past couple years. Many of these bottles have come and gone and are no longer available, such as versions of their Belgian style abbey ale (The Special) and coffee-infused porter (The Forty-Four). If you visit the brewery’s taproom today, you will find three limited edition bottles that are still available—Solera Rose (a mildly sour version of their Belgian style blonde ale), Metatron (a slightly more sour Belgian ale), and Miette.

Miette is Black Abbey’s bourbon barrel-aged Flanders Red style ale. This particular batch of Miette was aged in Woodford Reserve barrels and bottled on August 12, 2015, at an ABV of 5.5%. In case you’re curious, “miette” is French for “crumbs” (I’m not sure if that has anything to do with the name of this beer or not).

Flanders Reds are typically fruity, sour, and complex ales, and Miette is a solid American representation of the style. Nutty. Savory. More funky than sour. Plenty of dark fruits. Some oak. Certainly complex, with a good amount of depth. This beer is a good sipper. It demands your full and careful attention. Drink slowly and savor it.
