What I’m Drinking – February 12, 2017

A short summary of some of the drinks I’ve been enjoying this week.

Whisky:

Some of the best whisky I’ve ever had has been from independent bottlers of
Scotch. Although independent bottles are somewhat difficult to find around me, one of the more readily available is The Exclusive Malts range from The Creative Whisky Company. A year or so ago, a store I frequent had a few bottles of Auchroisk 2003 (11 year) bottled by The Exclusive Malts. I was intrigued, both due to the fact that Auchroisk is a fairly rare and hard to find single malt and because everything I’ve tried in the Exclusive Malts range has been good. But I hemmed and hawed over buying a bottle due to the price tag (around $100). One day I decided to go ahead and buy it, but when I got to the store, it was gone.

Last week, I stopped in a liquor store I hadn’t visited in several years, and lo and behold, they had two bottles of the same Auchroisk. I bought one without hesitation. It was worth the price tag—I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the bottle so far. I will be posting a review here in the near future.

In addition to the Auchroisk, I’ve been enjoying Macallan Edition No. 2 (good stuff, read my review here), Exclusive Blend 20 Year (also from The Creative Whisky Company, and also quite good), Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban (good for the price), and Hakushu 12 year (a very good Japanese single malt).

I also had the chance to sample a bottle of Deanston 12 year at a friend’s house. It was quite good—a well made Highland malt. I think I’ll probably buy a bottle of it myself in the near future.

Beer:

The best beer I had this week was probably Yazoo’s ETF E.H. Doble, which I reviewed yesterday. A few other highlights from the week include Free Will Brown Beard (which, like the E.H. Doble, is aged in rum barrels), Mantra Tacenda Sauvined (a dry-hopped muscadine grape sour), Yazoo Foeder #2 (another great beer from Yazoo’s ETF line), and Turtle Anarchy Portly Stout (a standard at my house).
