The Last Two Republicans with Balls (and They’re Both Women)

Today the Senate voted to confirm Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary. The vote was a 50-50 tie (broken by VP Pence), thanks to two Republicans who put their country ahead of their political party. I’m not going to get into how awful of a pick the extraordinarily under-qualified Ms. DeVos is to be the head of education in this country—the ridiculously bad cabinet that Trump has put together has been well covered by most honest media outlets. (And as bad of a pick as DeVos is, I would argue Tom Price and Scott Pruitt are far worse… not to mention Ben Carson and Rick Perry.) Instead I want to bring attention to the only two Republicans in the Senate who had the balls to vote against their party’s president—Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski.

Susan Collins of Maine has served in the Senate since 1987. She is currently the Chairwoman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging (yes, that’s a real thing) and previously chaired the Senate Committee on Homeland Security. She’s generally considered to be one of the most moderate Republicans in Congress. You can read more about her on Wikipedia and on her website. Follow her on Twitter at @SenatorCollins.

Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has served in the Senate since 2002. When she ran for her second term in 2010, she lost the Republican nomination in the primaries to a Tea Party candidate. She then ran in the general election as a write-in candidate and defeated both the Tea Party douchebag and the Democratic candidate. Read more about Senator Murkowski on Wikipedia and on her website. She tweets as @lisamurkowski.

Thank you to these two women for voting based on logic and reason, rather than playing politics.
